Frequency Of Macular Complications Associated With The Use Of Silicone Oil In Vitreoretinal Surgery For Retinal Detachment

  • Purpose:

    To determine the frequency of postoperative macular complications in patients who underwent vitreoretinal surgery for retinal detachment with the use of silicon oil as an intravitreal tamponade agent.

  • Methods:

    Retrospective, cohort study, was carried out in which 112 patients underwent vitreoretinal surgery from January of 2021 to February of 2023 with silicone oil as a tamponade agent. All included patients had a pre- and postoperative oct-a at 1 month and 6 months after the procedure

  • Results:

    Of 112 patients, 6.2% (N=7) presented macular complications; Of them, the average age was 63+7.3 years. 57% (N=4) were right eyes and 42% (N=3) were left eyes. 72% were men and 28% women. The average preoperative visual acuity (VA) in logMar was 1.4+0.3 and postoperative 1.2+0.2. One month after surgery, 57% (N=4) presented cystic macular edema; 43% (N=3) cystic spaces; 71% (N=5) epiretinal membrane; 57% (N=4) external band disruption.
    At 6 months, 71% (N=5) presented cystic macular edema; 71% (N=5) cystic spaces; 57% (N=4) epiretinal membrane; 57% (N=4) external bands disruption.

  • Conclusions:

    The presence of epiretinal membranes one month postoperatively and of cystic spaces and macular edema at 6 months postoperatively associated with the use of silicone oil are complications that are associated with poor visual acuity recovery and may be indicative of early removal of silicone oil.
